Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Format & Length: in person*, 6 hours (plus 1 hour of pre-work)

Audience: Intended for 3rd- 8th grade educators,  formal and nonformal, but all grades welcome

Description:

Prepare yourself with tools for an engaging spring of outdoor learning! Join us at the Bureau of Land Management’s Cathedral Hills Trail System to experience and explore nature journaling, a flexible, engaging, and adaptable teaching tool that helps students develop both scientific and social-emotional competencies.  The scientific competencies follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Along the trail, we will stop to practice close observation, inquiry, and connection-building using a series of nature journaling prompts. We will also practice giving feedback on journal entries to promote a growth mindset, model outdoor facilitation strategies, and discuss how to incorporate nature journaling in any learning context.

1/9/2023: Update regarding the trail conditions:  Dress for a 1.3-mile walk, on a rustic loop trail that experiences about 360' of elevation gain and loss.  (About 0.1 mile of very steep climbing at a 30% grade, and about 50' of very steep downhill, at a 40% grade.) Check it out here: https://onthegomap.com/s/qi1eessi  Please indicate in the registration form if you have accessibility concerns. We will share this information with the workshop facilitators, who will be happy to modify the route to accommodate all participants.

Bring a notebook and a pencil, water, bag lunch, and a camping chair (if you have one). The site has no potable water but does have restrooms at the trailhead.

This workshop is brought to you by: Southern Oregon Land Conservancy and Bureau of Land Management, Medford District and Oregon Natural Resources Educator Program (ONREP).
