Location: Fish Lake Historical Site, also known as the Fish Lake Remount Depot, located in the heart of the Oregon High Cascades in the Willamette National Forest

Audience: Middle School 6th-8th grade educators, formal and nonformal 

Curriculum: Project Learning Tree’s (PLT) Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide

Description: Spend a few days this coming summer with Oregon Natural Resources Education Program, Willamette National Forest, and Friends of Fish Lake for this first ever geology, hydrology, and history immersion workshop. Learn about the cultural history of Fish Lake: tribal use, early Oregonians, Forest Service mule packers & fire watch and the natural history of the area with a focus on the unique geology and hydrology of the Old Cascades and the current High Cascades. 

Then we will look to the future and work with you individually on making the information you gained in the workshop applicable to your students and your locations across Oregon.

Schedule: 

  • Show up early on August 2nd to set up your bunkhouse space, tent, or RV and orient yourself to the facilities. 
  • August 2nd Friends of Fish Lake will offer guided walks, mule packing demonstrations, and host a BBQ while we all get to know one another. 
  • On August 3rd we’ll dive into the geology/hydrology of the old and new Cascades and take an interactive hike with a Forest Service geologist and hydrologist. 

Cost: $25.00

  • We ask that participants contribute a nominal fee of $25 to help us offset the cost of this overnight, multi-day workshop. If you need financial assistance to cover this fee, please contact ONREP.
