Exploring Trees, Forests, and Forest Ecology: Tree Identification and Tree Measurements 

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., PT

Format: In person 

Audience:  geared toward K-8th grade educators, formal and non-formal, but 9-12th adaptations included 

Materials provided: PLT’s Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide 

Description:  Register for either or both of these Exploring Trees and Forest Ecology workshops to discover creative ways to engage students in tree and forest-related activities while building your own field skills. 

Enjoy the beautiful setting of Mount Pisgah Arboretum near Eugene/Springfield while collaborating with fellow educators to explore Project Learning Tree (PLT) activities and gain practical strategies to bring forest ecology to life in your classroom.

During the first workshop on March 20th, we will explore six activities from the PLT Explore Your Environment: K–8 Activity Guide, including:

  • Engaging in tree identification activities, where will identity 12 native tree species
  • Practicing tools and techniques for measuring trees in the field
  • Making connections between the lessons with Next Generating Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core standards

You’ll walk away with PLT’s Explore Your Environment guide along with additional materials and skills to take back to your classroom.

Come prepared for time outside along trails. Wear long pants and boots and bring your lunch and snacks.

 

Considerations: This workshop includes outside activities along trails/uneven terrain  and in varying weather conditions

ADA Restrooms are available on-site.
