Climate & Disaster Resilience: Preparing Students and Schools for Change

Time: 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., PT

Format: Online

Audience: K-12 formal and non-formal educators, administrators and other education staff

Description: Extreme weather and natural disasters are becoming more common in Oregon and beyond. This workshop helps educators connect climate change science to real-world events and build resilience at the classroom and community level.

You’ll learn practical strategies to:

  • Teach about climate-related hazards
  • Share tools and strategies for individual and community resilience
  • Support student preparedness and developmentally appropriate approaches to emotional wellbeing before and after emergencies
  • Integrate disaster readiness into classroom routines and school communication

Using resources from SubjectToClimate's Oregon Climate Education Hub, HazAdapt Safety App, and the American Red Cross, participants will explore hands-on, K–12 activities, including lessons on wildfires, resilience, and environmental justice, plus age-appropriate tools like Prepare with Pedro (K–2) and youth podcasts (grades 4–8).

Leave with ready-to-use materials, confidence in meeting Oregon climate education goals, awareness of Oregon climate education legislation and standards, and actionable ideas to foster student agency and community resilience.
